President Muhammadu Buhari, has on Saturday, December 3, appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, for understanding, stressing that his administration will resolve to meet their demands soon.
President Buhari, made the appeal, during the convocation ceremony of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, FUTO, Imo state.
He assured the Union of his administration’s resolve in meeting their needs, while calling for patience, and understanding.
Recall, that ASUU had gone on a one week warning strike, demanding the immediate exemption of Universities from the Treasury Single Account, TSA, and the implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FG agreement.
The President, represented by the Minister of State for Education, Professor Anthony Anwuka, urged ASUU, to appreciate the current economic challenges facing the country.
According to Professor Anwuka, President Buhari’s administration, will not renege on its promise to provide opportunities, and avenues, so that youths can develop their skills, and creative ingenuity.
He said, “As partners in progress, I plead for understanding, and cooperation, as the government is committed to addressing the various issues being canvassed by the Union, as we strive to right the wrongs of the past.“The fear is further amplified with the rising unemployment, coupled with the recent economic recession that has befallen our beloved country.“Periods like this, are opportunities for geniuses to emerge,” President Buhari said.
