Reports coming into us tonight from Customs Headquarters in Nigeria say anxiety has hung in the air over the interception of a container containing 49 boxes laden with 661 pump-action rifles allegedly imported from China into Nigeria by a certain young man who the Comptroller General identified as one Mr. OSCAN OKAFOR, an Igbo man.
The pump-action rifles numbering 661 were reportedly packed and concealed in 49 boxes in a 40ft container on a Mark Truck which was intercepted after it had been cleared through the Customs.
The destination of the truck still remained unknown as of the time it was intercepted.
According to our source, the incident is causing fears and apprehension in Nigeria and orders have been given the securities agencies to keep eyes on the Igbos and their merchandise in containers being imported into the country.
The order reportedly given and circulated is that containers coming into the country should be subjected to special search to ensure that arms and ammunition do not find its way into the country considering the tension and agitations in the southeast, our source added.
Arrested along with Mr. OSCAN OKAFOR the alleged importer are Mahmud Hassan who is the clearing agent and one Sadique Mustapha, 28, said to be accompanying the consignment to its destination.
