NLC demands resignation of health minister Osagie Ehanire

– The NLC president Comrade Ayuba Wabba, says the unions have issues with the ministry for reinstating the MD who had been arraigned in court for alleged corruption
Labour unions have called for the resignation of the minister of state Health, Osagie Ehanire for reinstating the managing director of the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri who had been arraigned in court for over alleged corrupt practices.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Medical and Health workers under the auspices of Joint Health Sector Unions, (JOHESU) protested at the Federal Secretariat complex on Thursday, January 26, asking the minister to resign for allegedly shielding the MD from justice as well as supporting the victimization of staff who blew the whistle of her corrupt acts, Daily Trust reports.
The NLC president Comrade Ayuba Wabba, said the unions had issues with the ministry for reinstating the MD of the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri who had been arraigned in court over alleged corruption.

He said: “The MD has actually been arraigned in court over sundry issues of corruption, but few days before her arraignment, she was brought back by the state Minister of health, so what’s funny is that the same government prosecuting her for stealing government’s money reinstated her and the whistle blowers are now being victimized.’’
Wabba said NLC had written the minister to ask him to invoke the provision of a Civil Service act that provides for indicted public officers to go under interdiction.

“But instead of that she was brought back and celebrated and for that reason the whistle blowers are now being victimized and subsequently removed from the payroll. We are also aware that the Minister has given express instruction that the right thing should be done in her case but the State minister of health who is directly supervising the federal medical centres has sat on these files and refused to carry out the instruction,” Wabba said.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to come out and address the nation so as to dispel rumour about his death.
Since his trip to the UK, there has been rumour circulating about the president’s state of health and alleged demise although this has been refuted by his media aide.
The Punch however reports that Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson who is the general secretary of the NLC spoke on Thursday, January 26 urging the president to put the rumour of his death to rest by addressing the country.
