The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday failed to make good its promise to open its defense at the Edo State elections petition tribunal sitting in Benin City, the state capital, citing logistics challenges and constraints in bringing corps members as witnesses.
It also applied for more time to contact and interact with its witnesses as well as prepare adequately for the defense.
Counsel to the commission, Onyinye Anumonye, during the proceedings, had applied for adjournment till Friday this week due to what he called logistics reasons. He told the three-man tribunal that most of the witnesses could not be readily reached before yesterday.
According to Anumonye, “Most of the times, INEC staff are not stationed in Edo State, but are members of the National Youth Service Corps scheme who have passed out of Edo State. From text messages sent to them, they were unable to make it.”
