GAMBIA: President ADAMA BARROW aligns with NIGERIA, takes major decision, ICD boss lauds decision for re-engagement with Int'l Community

The Gambia will not leave the International Criminal Court (ICC), President Adama Barrow has told a top European Union (EU) representative visiting the West African Country.
Neven Mimica, the EU Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development is in the country as part of efforts to streamline relations with The Gambia.
He tweeted about Barrow’s position to remain in the ICC contrary to the decision by former President Yahya Jammeh to leave. Jammeh’s government at the time described the ICC as an ‘International Caucasian Court’ that targeted only Africans.

The Jammeh government started the ICC withdrawal process last year but it takes a year to completely exit according to the Rome Statute. Other African countries that have started withdrawal processes include Burundi and South Africa.
In a similar vein, Nigeria also says it will not pull out of the International Criminal Court despite the mass withdrawal announced and assented to by many African leaders in the African diplomatic capital of Adis Ababa.
